Breaking Barriers: Campfire Digital’s New R&D Project Explores Inclusivity in Immersive Media

Author: Steve Banbury

We’re excited to announce that Campfire Digital has been awarded funding by Media Cymru’s R&D Seed Funding Programme, enabling us to embark on an exciting new research and development project exploring innovative ways to make immersive media (XR/VR/Spatial Computing) more inclusive and accessible.

Why This Matters

Immersive technology holds extraordinary potential for creativity, education, and connection. But for many people, engaging with these experiences isn’t always straightforward. Barriers such as sensory sensitivities, disabilities, digital exclusion, and accessibility concerns can make participation difficult or even impossible.

We believe that immersive experiences should be open to everyone. With the support of Media Cymru, we’ll be investigating new approaches to designing interactive and adaptive virtual environments - ones that prioritise usability, creativity, and accessibility from the ground up.

Our Vision: Inclusive, Adaptive, and Human-Centred XR

Our R&D project is driven by a vision of immersive media that embraces inclusivity at its core. We want to create environments that don’t just invite people in but actively support them in engaging meaningfully, regardless of their needs or circumstances.

We’ll be researching solutions that allow users to personalise their immersive experience, making them more adaptable to individual preferences. Whether it’s enabling external control systems for those who struggle with traditional VR interfaces or creating mechanisms to reduce sensory overload, our goal is to develop a framework for accessibility that can be applied to a wide range of immersive experiences.

Building on Past Success

Our work in this space isn’t new. During the COVID-19 pandemic, our developers created a virtual live theatre performance space for BA students at Falmouth University, enabling isolated students to create and present live performances. The platform allowed performers to stream live via webcam into a virtual space and interact with audiences, while producers could monitor and control the virtual environment remotely.

This project reinforced what we already suspected - when immersive technology is designed with inclusivity in mind, it can break down barriers and create powerful new opportunities for engagement. Now, we’re excited to take this concept even further.

What's Next?

As we embark on this journey, we’ll be sharing our progress, insights, and discoveries along the way. We’re particularly keen to collaborate with organisations, developers, and communities who share our passion for inclusive design in immersive media. If that sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you!
